PhD Student Position in Natural Science Specialising Physical Geography : Sweden
This scholarship is available for those students who have qualifications from basic educations and from advanced level and specific qualifications
Study Subject: Natural Science, Physical Geography
Employer: University of Gothenburg
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Post Graduate Student wanted for taking part in the project ”Biodiversity and ecosystem services in a changing climate (BECC)” a strategic project hosted by Lund University in co-operation with University of Gothenburg (UGOT) and co-funded by UGOT. The research of BECC will bring together complementary expertise to address climate impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity. Included are both natural and social science perspectives; at local, regional and global scales to achieve improved scientific knowledge as well as end-user value. Six research clusters have been formed where this project mainly is included within “Agriculture and Global Change”. Land use and its environmental impact both on a local and national scale will be studied.
A main focus for this PhD student position is nitrous oxide (N2O), a gas about 300 times stronger than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and long lived in the atmosphere. Production of biomass, irrespectively aimed for food or biofuels influence and cause emission of N2O from the soil. Similar to soil carbon storage a low N2O emission can be viewed an ecosystem service. The project goal is to gather new and synthesize existing knowledge to be able to scale the N2O emission from a clod of soil to the whole agricultural landscape, and also from hours to decades. Both a natural background emission and the main anthropogenic influences are to be described, for suggestions on possible mitigation options. Tools will be both experiments and models like the CoupModel platform and the LPJ-GUESS for evaluation of emissions on the landscape and decadal scales. We are seeking a Post Graduate Student with keen interest in physical geography, biology and climate with knowledge in model work.
